What is the difference between wood board and the other boards?
Wood boards tend to have a little bit more flex to them, more like a skateboard. The wood boards also tend to be a little bit heavier and that added weight allows for the board to hold better on turns without spinning out. Wood boards are a lot less expensive but require a bit more preventative maintenance as well. Other boards have a lighterweight core material and multiple layers of fiberglass cloth. The weights of these boards can fluctuate depending on what materials are used. These boards tend to be a little bit more durable and require a little less maintenance.
What do channels do?
Channels create a little bit more hold or traction during turns. The water flows through the channels or “grooves” as many people call them, and the board tracks a bit more causing it to feel a little more controlled and responsive.
What are rails?
Rails are the sides of the board, this is the part of the board that helps hold the board in the water during turns.
What is Side Cut?
Side cut is where the middle of the board is slightly narrower than the rest of the board. Boards without side cut have the widest point of the board in the middle of the board. Side cut which also looks like an hourglass shape came from the Snowboard industry. Boards that have side cut respond very quickly and move very quickly from side to side or rail to rail.
What is better between longer boards and shorter boards?
There is not really one that is better, it comes down to riding style and what you are looking for. The longer boards tend to hold better on turns and have a larger landing area when trying tricks where you leave your board. The shorter boards tend to feel more responsive and quick under your feet. The have less rail which allows them to turn more quickly and be a little less sensitive to catching while doing spins.
What is EVA?
EVA is the soft foam padding that covers the rail of all the boards and most of the tops of the boards. The EVA helps protect the board from damaging the ride surface and also helps protect the rider if they come in contact with the board.
